Ray-Ban revives
a retro classic
Browline glasses had their heyday in
the 1950s and ’60s, when rebels such as
Malcolm X and Buddy Holly favored them,
but they never faded away completely. The
acetate frames were formally reintroduced
when Ray-Ban unveiled the Clubmaster in
1986. And thanks to Holly wood’s helping
hand—think Matt Damon in The Talented
Mr. Ripley and Kevin Costner in JFK—
they’ve held their own as chic fashion
accessories ever since. Now, as part of Ray-
Ban’s Icons collection, these classic frames
are being released again in seven new
colors (including bright blue, red, gold, and
silver) as well as in the original black and
tortoiseshell models. They are available as
sunglasses or with clear prescription lenses.
As Kevin Bacon noted at the relaunch
event in New York, “They just always look
cool.” MICHAEL SLENSKE
