LE T TERS
Thinking Caps(ules)
Taras Grescoe’s story about
omega-3s [“The One That Got
Away,” February] convinced me to
start taking a supplement. What
does he take? Bill, Gladstone, MO
Taras Grescoe responds:
I look for capsules made from sustainable fish such
as sardines and anchovies (preferably Peruvian
anchoveta); the source should be marked on the
ingredients list. The brand I’m using now, from
Webber Naturals, has 400 milligrams of EPA
and 200 milligrams of DHA.
Motor City Madman?
I enjoy Best Life, but that Ted Nugent piece
sickened me [“My First Kill,” February].
Obviously influenced by his “first kill,” Nugent
designed his signature arrow to ensure that
animals suffer as they bleed to death.
James Connelly, Brighton, MI
Ted Nugent responds: There is no swifter or
more painless death in the wild than that by a
razor-sharp broadhead in the hands of a conscientious
bow hunter. Those of us who are honest enough to
dedicate ourselves to the perfect tradition of hands-on
consumerism through a hunting, fishing, and trapping
lifestyle know that we are indeed one with the beasts.
Real-Food Smackdown
The restaurants in “Real Food” [February]
sound great, but the selections seem a bit biased.
Eleven of the 25 restaurants are in New York or
California. What gives? James, Washington, VA

Letter of the Month
BRAND-NEW DAY
After I read “Monsters Inc.” [December/January],
I was struck by the reality of how excessive
marketing is in our culture. Recently, my daughter
got upset because we left her Dora the Explorer
toothpaste at her grandmother’s house. She had
to use her Thomas the Tank Engine toothpaste,
which is suddenly inferior. This seems harmless,
but she is only 3! Today’s kids want iPhones
without even understanding what they are. Since
the toothpaste incident, I’ve tried to set a good
example by limiting trips to big-box stores, where
excessive branding on everyday items runs
rampant. Jason Barr, via e-mail
Editor’s response: New York also has two
professional baseball teams, while Virginia has zero.
Are you going to claim bias here too? Seriously
though, New York and California have long been at
the forefront of our nation’s food movements, and
they are at the forefront of this trend as well. But
