The shoes: Perfectly polished black or
brown laced shoes are best (wear a cap toe

THE BEST WAY TO
DETERMINE HOW MANY CALORIES
ARE IN A RESTAURANT MEAL
CAREER
I’m thinking about
changing jobs. How
can I avoid being
“last in, first out”?
Step one: Skew your job search in favor of
well-established companies with a proven
record of success. Ninety-eight percent
of U.S. businesses employ fewer than 100
people. These companies are often founded
by engineers, lawyers, or accountants, and
typically don’t operate with the acumen of
a Fortune 500 company. They’re also more
likely to use the “last in, first out” (LIFO)
principle. Here are steps two through five:
Tap your network. Get in touch with people
who know the company and ask about the
firm’s stability and average turnover rate.
Interview your new boss. Once an offer
is made, sit down with your potential
supervisor. Ask about the direction of the
company, the average tenure, and where the
position could lead. If you don’t get specific
answers, think twice before accepting.
Examine the situation. Good poker players
study the other players for tells before they
First, visit the restaurant’s
Web site, as an estimated
75 percent of eateries
provide nutrition info
either online or in their
dining rooms. But if you’re
at a bistro that hasn’t
joined this trend, use the
following tips to ballpark
your calorie intake. You
can also visit calorieking
.com on your cell phone to
determine the calories in
specific foods and popular
restaurant meals.
Breakfast: An egg sandwich has
300 to 600 calories, depending
on your choice of bread, cheese,
and meat (an English muffin with
egg and ham is the healthiest
way to go). A stack of pancakes
will set you back more than
800 calories, although you can
save a couple hundred calories
by holding the butter and
substituting agave nectar for
maple syrup.
Lunch: The salad bar isn’t always
your friend. Lunch-size salads
run any where from 500 to 900
calories, depending on what you
throw into the bowl. Don’t be
quick to dismiss fast food either:
At 600 calories, Burger King’s
Whopper has 400 fewer calories
than most bistro burgers. But do
avoid the value-meal option. The
fries and soft drink will double
your calorie count. Opt for seltzer
or unsweetened iced tea instead.
Dinner: A Caesar side salad will
cost you 400 calories; a bowl of
pasta, around 900 calories; and
the average eight-ounce steak,
about 600 calories (less for sirloin,
more for rib eye and strip). The
healthiest choice is grilled fish, no
sauce, lemon on the side. It will be
less than 400 calories every time.
Dessert: A slice of cake or pie
packs 600 to 900 calories, so
order a small scoop of ice cream
instead. At 250 calories, it won’t
ruin your diet. MAT T GOULDING

try to win hands. Employ the same strategy.
Spend the first few months learning the
system, turning out good work, and building
relationships instead of blowing down doors
to prove your value.
Become a cornerstone. Once you know
the system, become indispensable by
subtly publicizing your good work. Even a
company that employs LIFO won’t want to
let you go if you’ve highlighted your value to
the right people. TONY BESHARA , PH .D .

WEIGHT LOSS
What’s the quickest
way to get rid of a
double chin?
You can have a procedure called
submental liposuction, which requires
only a small incision below the chin line.
Because double chins are composed
almost entirely of fat, such minimally
invasive surgery is highly effective. It
costs up to $3,000 and recovery time

Q: Will an orange a day
reduce my blood pressure?
Don’t count on it. The study at the center of the eat-more-oranges
headlines suffers from a major flaw: It included only 11 people, which
is hardly a big enough group from which to draw conclusions. The
bottom line is that for all the proven benefits of consuming foods that
are rich in vitamin C (enhanced tissue repair, free-radical protection,
immune function), lower blood pressure isn’t one of them. To lower
your blood pressure without (or in addition to) medication, exercise
vigorously for 30 minutes a day, lose weight, consume a rainbow
of fruits and vegetables, and reduce your salt intake. The last two
strategies alone can lower your blood pressure by up to 14 points.
